Some of the key strengths of the IKEA spring mattresses include:
- Abundant options available: IKEA has several mattresses with very different compositions and prices. You can select among this variety based on your specific needs and budget.
- Great for low budgets: IKEA has very low prices on its mattresses, and its budget options are about as low-cost as can be found from any retailer.
- Long sleep trial: the company offers a 365 day trial period during which you can return or exchange your mattress.
Potential drawbacks for the IKEA mattresses include:
- Limited firmness options: None of the IKEA spring mattresses have a plush feel. All are at least medium firm, and most sleepers tend to find them on the higher end of that range.
- Lower coil counts: while the coil counts for these mattresses varies based on the model, the total coil counts for this line from IKEA tends to be lower than many of the top innerspring or hybrid direct-to-consumer mattresses available.
- Shipping costs: the company charges $99 for shipping, even for compressed mattresses, which is in contrast to most of the direct-to-consumer online mattress companies.

IKEA Spring Mattresses Specifications
IKEA manufactures 7 different models of innerspring mattresses. Each has a different composition and set of specifications, as described in the table below.
IKEA does not list fully detailed information about these mattresses such as the thickness of the different layers. This can make it somewhat more difficult to compare the mattress to others that are on the market.

Where It’s Made
IKEA mattresses are made in Sweden.
Buying Logistics
Where to Buy
IKEA mattresses are sold via the company’s stores, website, and over the phone.
Sleep Trial / Refunds
IKEA offers a 1 year (365 day) return or exchange policy for its mattresses. During this time, as long as you have your receipt and valid ID, you can either return your mattress for a refund or exchange it for a different mattress.
If you purchased a mattress online, you can return the item to your local IKEA. You can also have IKEA pick up your mattress for a fee. You may also be able to return it via parcel, though this can present logistical challenges.
Delivery
Many IKEA mattresses are available in-store, and you can check availability on the IKEA website. For people who want the mattress delivered, shipping typically costs $99.
The Jomna, Hasvag, Haugesund, and Haugsvar spring models are all delivered as a bed-in-a-box. This means that the mattresses are compressed into plastic packaging and delivered to your doorstep in a box. When you remove the mattress from the packaging, it expands as it decompresses. The mattress should reach its full size within 3-4 days.
The Hesstun, Hjellestad, and Holmsbu models are not roll-packed and are instead delivered at their full size.
Warranty
IKEA offers a 25-year limited warranty on its mattresses. This warranty covers the interior mattress components but not the mattress cover. If there is a defect in materials or workmanship during the warranty period, IKEA will repair or replace the mattress. You can find full warranty details at ikea.com.
Customer Service
IKEA is a much-beloved store by many for its low-cost products, varied designs, and its food court. But their customer service reputation is not quite as sterling. While generally well-perceived for its customer-orientation, there are reports of some difficult experiences for customers, much like with any huge retailer. The company has an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. In addition, handling of returns or repairs may be an issue for people who do not live near an IKEA.
Mattress Performance
This line of mattresses from IKEA offers a wide diversity of types of spring mattress styles. Some involve very simple spring and foam layers while others have multiple layers of springs or micro-springs.
Support
Innerspring coils are a tried-and-true base for offering quality support from a mattress. This is especially true of pocketed coils, which have more ability to adjust and respond to different amounts of pressure at different points on the mattress. As a result, these mattresses can typically be thought of as providing a solid base level of support.
Unfortunately, though, many of these models also have low-density foams on top of the innerspring layer(s). For some, this may reduce the overall supportiveness. It may also provide a feel that is too firm and not responsive enough to specific pressure points. Heavier sleepers may also get less support from a mattress with a thin or weak foam comfort layer.
Durability
Some of these models have been changed over time, and as a result, there is limited long-term data about their durability. Our concerns about the longevity of these mattresses stems from the lower coil counts and from the lower-density foams that are used in many models. These are more likely to suffer from sagging or indentation with regular use.
Firmness
IKEA’s mattresses are known for being firm. There is no option for a firmness level below medium firm. Three models also offer a firmer choice. You can see a listing of the firmness for each of these mattresses in the table below.
| Mattress Model | Firmness Rating |
|---|---|
| Jomna | Medium firm |
| Hasvag | Medium firm |
| Haugesund | Medium firm OR firm |
| Haugsvar | Medium firm OR firm |
| Hesstun | Medium firm OR firm |
| Hjellestad | Medium firm |
| Holmsbu | Medium firm |
People who prefer the feel of a softer or more plush mattress should almost certainly choose a different option than what is offered by IKEA.
Motion Transfer
Pocketed innerspring coils tend to help reduce motion transfer compared to other types of innerspring mattresses, and the firm foam layers that are used in these models also should help to negate most motion transfer. That said, people who are very concerned about being disrupted in their sleep may want to opt for a traditional memory foam mattress as they have the best motion isolation properties.
Offgassing
None of these mattresses has been reported for any serious smell issues. Because they generally have less foam than other mattresses on the market, they are less likely to give off any odor. Any new mattress smell is not harmful and should quickly dissipate.
Sleeping Hot
When people complain about sleeping hot, it is usually the result of sinking deeply into a mattress, which prevents airflow and causes heat retention. Because of the bounce of pocketed coils and the firmness of the foam, sleeping hot has not been noted as a major issue in these offerings from IKEA.
Intimacy
The bounce and firmness from the innerspring coils and foam used in these models should prevent the “stuck” feeling that is sometimes associated with mattresses that inhibit sexual activity.
